The purpose of the Principal of the Year Award is to recognize outstanding Washington, DC
public school principals for their dedication, professionalism, and work on behalf of our city's youngest
citizens. Principals receiving this award can be nominated by the community - parents, youth, educators,
administrators, and other community members - for excellence as leaders in their school and their city.
The individual chosen as Principal of the Year will be recognized at the seventh annual
Sweet Charity event on May 5th and will be presented with brand new, age appropriate books for the
children that attend their school.
Principal criteria:
- Nominee must serve as a principal within the District of Columbia’s public school system
- Nominee must attend Sweet Charity, Monday, May 5, 2008, to receive the award
- Nominee must have completed at least five years as an acting principal
- Nominee will be an active principal during the year in which he/she will receive the award
- Nominee is respected by students, colleagues, parents, and the community at large
- Nominee assumes an active role in his/her community
