Heart of America recognizes the deep uncertainty, fear, and trauma many families and communities in the Twin Cities are experiencing right now. As turmoil continues across our community, our hearts remain with the children, educators, and families whose sense of student safety and stability has been shaken.
Research shows that for learning to occur, students’ basic needs must be met – food, shelter, and safety. A sense of safety is paramount. Historically, schools are essential places where children should feel safe, supported, and free to learn without fear. Violence, intimidation, or enforcement activity in or near school campuses has no place in learning environments — and children should not be exposed to harm where they are supposed to feel the most secure.
The Twin Cities are home to Heart of America. We are deeply rooted here through our partnerships with Minneapolis Public Schools and Saint Paul Public Schools, as well as with many nonprofit youth and education partners, and through colleagues and families who are part of this community. We stand alongside our partners and neighbors with a continued commitment to compassion, care, and unity during moments that feel deeply dividing.
