If there’s a guiding principle Heart of America has upheld over the years, it’s that literacy is the foundation of children’s education. Books are more than just tools for learning; they spark imagination, explore cultures, and help our minds wander with curiosity!
For most parents, their fondest memories are of reading with their children. I know these were not only learning but bonding moments for me and my husband! Yet, this cherished experience isn’t accessible to all kids across the country. Socioeconomic factors such as household income and location, not to mention community and school district resourcing, determine a child’s access to quality reading materials, if they have access at all.
This isn’t just a theory. Currently, America’s schools are facing a multi-billion-dollar funding shortfall, with real, measurable negative impacts on children’s literacy. Experts recommend that each child have access to at least twenty books, yet many don’t have even half that. Shockingly, 1 in 4 kids in the U.S. can’t read, a crisis worsened by the fact that 61% of low-income households have no books at all.
It’s not just about the number of books, either; it’s about the best books. As a founding member of the Diverse Books for All Coalition, we believe every child deserves to see their culture, language, and skin color represented in the stories they read. Providing literature that honors each child’s unique identity is essential — not just for learning to read but for nurturing a lifelong love of reading.

We know books are crucial, but they’re just the starting point. Our mission to support literacy is tied to a much bigger goal: addressing today’s deep inequities in education.
Our prerogative is to ensure kids have what they need to learn and thrive. That means providing high-quality, representative education materials. But it means updating science labs with modern equipment to uphold a cutting-edge STEM curriculum. And organic gardens, planting trees and creating outdoor classrooms so kids have cleaner, greener school grounds in which to play and learn. It can even mean upgrading the teachers’ lounge so that staff have a comfortable place to recharge, reflect and plan before class.
Every student, regardless of their background, deserves access to the resources necessary for success. As we approach the end of 2024, we invite you to join us in this mission. Your donation today can help us equip tomorrow’s leaders with diverse and inspiring books. Together, we can create meaningful change!
