Meaningful change doesn’t end when a space is transformed. It continues when schools take what’s been built and carry it forward in ways that reflect their students, educators, and communities.

That belief is at the heart of the Halamandaris Award. This $10,000 annual award recognizes schools that have taken the seeds planted through an initial Heart of America space transformation and amplified their impact. Whether through expanded programming, renewed stewardship, or deepened partnerships, recipients show how thoughtful investment and innovation can lead to lasting student success.

We are proud to announce that a Boston Public School, James W. Hennigan School in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, is the 2025 Halamandaris Award recipient.

2025 Halamandaris Award Recipient: James W. Hennigan School

The Hennigan School’s original Heart of America library transformation took place in 2011. In the years that followed, the space faced challenges, including periods without consistent staffing. When Kelly Donoghue, librarian at Hennigan Elementary School, began her role in 2023, she saw an opportunity to restore the library’s purpose and potential.

Through months of care and organization, the library was reestablished as a welcoming, fully accessible space where students can explore, read, and learn. The 2025 Halamandaris Award will allow the school to take the next step forward by purchasing new books and materials, funding author visits, and replacing damaged or lost furniture—ensuring the library remains a vibrant, well-supported resource for years to come.

“This award allows us to keep the library welcoming, accessible, and alive for students,” Donoghue shared. “It’s an incredible opportunity, and we’re very grateful.”

Recognizing the 2025 Runner-Ups

In addition to this year’s recipient, we are also honored to recognize two Halamandaris Award runner-upsGenevieve Melody STEM Elementary School in Chicago and The Historic Samuel Coleridge Taylor Elementary School in Baltimore. Each school will receive $500 in books in recognition of its continued commitment to strengthening learning spaces and supporting student growth.

These schools exemplify what’s possible when educators and communities build on past investments with intention and care.
