Every young learner deserves learning spaces that feel welcoming, safe, inspiring, and full of possibility. Yet across the United States, too many students are learning in buildings that haven’t been meaningfully updated in decades. In fact, the nation’s school infrastructure currently holds a D+ rating, and there is nearly a $100 billion gap just to bring existing facilities into good repair.

This isn’t just about appearances. When these spaces are outdated or neglected, it impacts creativity, collaboration, confidence, and ultimately, opportunity.

That’s why Heart of America is launching something bold: the Schoolhouse Revolution.

2,030 by 2030

The Schoolhouse Revolution is our roadmap to transform spaces across the country. By 2030, we will reimagine and transform 2,030 learning spaces and provide resources that empower 3.5 million students. This will include STEAM labs, libraries, wellness rooms, and career and college readiness centers, equipped with modern technology, new furniture, and learning materials, each designed with educators and students at the heart, all with a shared idea: Transforming spaces transforms lives.

Why Now?

The need has never been greater. There are nearly 100,000 public PK–12 schools in the United States, and the average building is almost 50 years old. Most school funding simply covers the basics, such as repairing aging systems, addressing structural issues, and maintaining safety standards.

That leaves little room for imagination.

We all know how teachers often spend their own money on classroom supplies, and communities rally around crowdfunding campaigns for essentials. In environments where resources are scarce, dreaming big can feel impossible.

And we aim to change that mindset, going from scarcity to possibility.

Why Heart of America?

For nearly 30 years, Heart of America has partnered with schools and communities to do this work. With nearly 1,600 new education spaces already completed, we bring deep experience and a national network of collaborators, from contractors to corporate and philanthropic partners.

Just as importantly, Heart of America designs with communities, not for them. Each project begins with listening to understand the unique goals, challenges, and aspirations of the educators and students who will use the space every day.

That collaborative approach ensures the results are not just beautiful, but meaningful and lasting.

The Work Ahead

The goal is ambitious. But the scale of the need demands ambition. Because when schools become vibrant places to learn, discover, and belong, students gain more than a better classroom: They gain the confidence to imagine a bigger future. And that’s exactly what the Schoolhouse Revolution is all about.
